The importer must have an import permit and an importer identification number. If the importer is to import without an import permit, then the importer needs to apply for a special permit for imports without API to the Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia.

The process of providing documentation includes a requirement that the importer notify the customs office prior to the arrival of the goods and submit the import documents electronically via electronic data exchange (EDI) in a standard format that is placed on a flash drive. In addition to providing import documents, the Customs Office will perform a physical inspection of imported goods. There are import duties imposed on incoming goods based on the classification of goods from the Indonesian Customs Tariff Book or the Harmonized System Code. Since 2013, food products are required to have an Indonesian label.
